Hello 6th - 8th grade families!
I hope everyone had a great, long holiday weekend.
September 12th is Back-to-school night. Join us from 6 - 7pm to hear about what your child will be learning in math this year. I run this time in a town hall style so you can ask all the questions you want and we can make sure you are getting all of the information necessary so your child can find maximum success this year. This night is for parents only.
6th, 7th, and 8th are all nearing the end of their first chapters so we will have our first tests of the year. Generally chapter tests happen every three weeks or so. We will always review and practice for several days. See the individual class notes below for exact test days and details. 7th and 8th will have their tests this Friday.
A reminder for this year, I am more than happy to let kids correct their online homework grades, or if they complete them after the due date, but they MUST MUST MUST email me with the assignment name and that they are complete. Otherwise I won't know to update the grade in the grade book. Any assignment makeup's or redo's must be done BEFORE the next test. I will only accept late assignments after the test on the very rare occurrence that we made an agreed upon arrangement.
The Roboteer Cadets, 7th & 8th grade First Tech Challenge (FTC) Robotics team hosted by the Lutheran High Roboteers, is having an open information meeting! It’s on Tuesday, September 3rd at 6:30 pm in the STEM Lab, room 400. Email CadetInfo@stem2u.org for more information.
Join the iNews: Eagle Weekly email list (will be emailed directly each week)
Other Reminders:
Just remember Google Classroom is where everything is at. Your child's passwords are all in their planner so please feel free to copy those down and peek through their accounts often (especially email). Here is a video on how to navigate Google Classroom: https://youtu.be/qoOe3ir5iqQ
Regular chapel can be viewed live on our Youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3-agaQWl4BGu9bEAh1TbgQ, or on our Facebook page.
Each student's passwords are found in the student planner. Here you can find IXL, email, and math textbook codes.
All class notes can be found on this website. I added links down below in the class notes.

This Week in 6th Grade
Right now we are reviewing many of the concepts introduced in 4th and 5th grade. We are starting out with performing operations (add, subtract, multiply, divide) on decimal numbers. The goal this year is to master these skills. There is a huge emphasis on multiplying and dividing this year. If students are struggling I have many many resources available to help, starting with daily class notes posted on this website. See the link below :)
We have our first test scheduled for next Tuesday!
What are we learning?: How do you compute multi-digit numbers with decimals? Why is place value so important?

Monday: No School
-
Tuesday: 3-8: Divide Decimals by Decimals
-
Wednesday: Chapter 3 Review
-
Thursday: Chapter 3 Review and Practice
-
Friday: Chapter 3 Review and Practice
This Week in 7th Grade
Last week we will learn how to perform operations with negative numbers. This concept wil stick around and be used all school year, and is very common that students will need to practice with negatives for a year before they really start understanding how negatives work. It's just one of those things that take a lot of practice but once they get it they get it, so don't get discouraged.
We will review this week and have our first test on Friday. I always assign practice problems through an online program called Quizizz. Students can practice as many times as they want or need, and I will take their HIGHEST score for a grade. The best students will practice several times, even if they get an A the first time. I always say if you get 100% the first go, do it again and see if you can get the same score.
What are we learning?: How to add, subtract, multiply, and divide integers. What are integers? Any whole number, their opposites (negatives), and zero.

Tuesday: Chapter 2 Review

Wednesday: Chapter 2 Review

Friday: Chapter 2 Test

This Week in 8th Grade
This week we will be focusing on what functions are. A function is something (in our case a math equation) that takes an input and produces only one possible output for that given input.

Have a great week! ~ Rich Wuebbels

So, you talked throughout the lesson and now your math doesn't math.
Other Reminders:
Just remember Google Classroom is where everything is at. Your child's passwords are all on the first page of their planner so please feel free to copy those down and peek through their accounts often. Here is a video on how to navigate Google Classroom: https://youtu.be/qoOe3ir5iqQ
IXL grading is a little different from other assignments. A 90% "smart score" in IXL is equivalent to 100% in FastDirect. Anything over a 90% is worth up to one bonus point...they add up so I encourage students to try it (especially on the easier assignments).
